American University attracts ambitious and enterprising undergraduates, but a job search is rarely a top priority as students commence their final year on campus. The Career Center capitalized on the idea that seniors have a tendency to procrastinate, and mailed an oversized postcard to the Class of 2011—students at risk in a particularly weak job market. I took the concept and developed a marketing campaign and written materials. I quickly developed a flexible visual identity to represent the office on and off campus, and applied a simple visual language to a variety of digital and print work. Over the past three years, I've consistently evaluated this identity system, allowing it to grow with time, adapt to changes like the AU Web redesign, and improve to meet growing demands from the office. These efforts culminated in a series of bold and engaging illustrations and print publications this past fall. These professional pieces presented students with a dynamic and engaging vision of Career Center services across a myriad of media, ranging from videos to rack cards, and establish a voice for podcasts and tweets alike. Curated by University of Michigan professors Rebekah Modrak, Aaron Ahuvia and MFA candidate Zackery Denfeld, ebayaday consists of 25 auctions (one debuts each day) in which the entire eBay listing (item for sale, descriptive text and imagery and placement within chosen categories) is the artwork. Works presented in the show exploit, redefine or underscore eBay’s potential in the exchange of ideas, objects and money. Helping to define the exhibits identity, I designed and executed all of the show’s printed materials. This included the exhibition catalog, promotional posters, and the materials for a follow up show in a more traditional gallery space. The most exciting aspect of the design quickly became the catalog which consisted of a small booklet with articles, postcards documenting each artists’ work, and large map displaying the point of origination and final buyer location for all exhibition pieces. I designed the whole package to reflect and draw attention to the unique relationship between artist and audience through ebay. Overall I’m quite pleased with the final product.
